After receiving his Msc in Industrial Ecology at Leiden University, Benjamin Sprecher started working on his PhD research concerning the extraction of raw materials from waste streams. He does this in close cooperation with industrial partner Van Gansewinkel. In addition to his PhD work he is currently undertaking a two-year management traineeship program at Van Gansewinkel.
Extraction of raw materials from waste streams is a very broad topic. The focus lies on the recycling of metals. Base metals are recycled to a certain extent, but many others (e.g. rare earth) not. Even when base metals are recycled they often suffer a reduction in quality because various alloys are mixed during recycling. The PhD program approaches this topic from two sides: on the one hand social network analysis is used to describe the entire Dutch metals recycling network. On the other hand experiments are being done to look into the feasibility of recycling NdFeB permanent magnets.
