Professional experience

Johanna is PhD researcher at the Conservation Biology department of Leiden University. She has started her PhD research at VU University Amsterdam. Here she worked at the Earth Sciences and Economics group and was a guest researcher at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM).

Last year, she participated in the three-month South African - Young Scientists Summer Program organized by the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and hosted by the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein (South Africa).

Before taking on her current position, Johanna completed a BSc degree in Biology from Utrecht University and an MSc degree in Forest and Nature Conservation with a specialization in Ecology from Wageningen University. During her masters, she conducted a research internship at the Global Mechanism of the UNCCD concentrating on a meta-analysis of the economic value of drylands based on an ecosystem services approach.

Research topic

Johanna’s research focuses on the quantification of ecosystem services at the landscape scale across river catchments. She is aiming to link landscape elements with ecosystem services and their economic value by using different types of quantification methods, such as spatial analysis (GIS), economic valuation and modelling. Johanna is particularly interested in those regions that experience water shortages (i.e. water stress) or water quality problems (e.g. eutrophication).
